Testing conducted at QAI Laboratories, IAS accredited fire testing laboratory and CALFIRE Approved Testing Laboratory

ASTM E 84 (NFPA 255, UL 723), 10 minutes:
Results
  • Firefree Class A, Flame Spread Index 25, minimal thickness of 6 mils (.006 inch) dry application.
  • Firefree Class A, Flame Spread Index zero (0), minimal thickness of 10 mils (.010 inch) dry application, it also meets the requirement for smoke developed index of 30 (≤50) smoke characteristics used in air plenum spaces.

Results
  • Firefree Class A tested on 2x6 engineered OSB at 20 mils (.020 inch) dry thickness achieved a flame spread index of zero (0) and smoke developed index of zero (0).
  • Firefree Class A tested on 7/16” OSB at 20 mils (.020 inch) dry achieved a flame spread index of zero (0) and smoke developed index of ten (10), and show no evidence of significant progressive combustion when the test is continued for an additional 20-minute period.
  • Firefree Class A tested on ¾” OSB at 15 (.015 inch) dry achieved a flame spread index of zero (0) and smoke developed index of 15.
  • Firefree Class A tested on 2x6 T&G Douglas fir at 8 mils (.008 inch) dry achieved a flame spread index of zero (0) and smoke developed index of 45.
  • Firefree Class A, coated with 6 mils dry of Ff Exterior Topcoat, tested on 5/8” T1-11 Douglas Fir at 20 mils (.020) achieved a flame spread index of zero (0) and smoke developed index of 0.

In addition to the testing performed, although it is not required by the test standard, char damage measurements were taken to effectively show the high performance level of the coating. Based on the results obtained from the 30 minute extended test, the wood materials tested showed minimal char damage, showing FFA’s ability to assist in maintaining the structural integrity of the wood materials in a fire situation.

Fire Safety. For various reasons, including (i) the very different circumstances that may exist from one fire to another, (ii) the differences between conditions in an actual fire and laboratory conditions in which testing is conducted, and (iii) the inherent variability of fire tests, passing a laboratory test or certifying/labeling FfA for use in specific assemblies/systems does not mean that the same application of FfA will necessarily provide an equivalent protection or the same result in an actual fire or in a new laboratory test. Furthermore, FfA is to be used only as a component of complete fire retardation systems for the whole structure. It will only contribute to slowing fire spread for the area where it has been applied and will not, by itself, prevent a fire from starting or continuing. The amount by which FfA retards a particular fire will depend, among other things, on (i) the amount of FfA applied, (ii) the conditions of the other elements of the assembly incorporating FfA, and (iii) the conditions of the actual fire itself. FfA will not make a fire any less dangerous to persons or property. Firefree cannot guarantee that loss or injury will not be suffered by persons or property. It is the sole responsibility of the applicator to ensure that FfA has been applied in accordance with the application directions. It is the responsibility of the occupier to ensure the paint is not cracked, chipped or peeling.
